Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment’s gamble on a Minecraft Movie has undoubtedly paid off, as the film rockets to a fantastic start at the box office. After over a decade of development, A Minecraft Movie earned an impressive $58 million USD across North America from Friday and preview screenings alone. This opening day success marks the largest of 2025 so far, surpassing the $40.9 million opening of Captain America: Brave New World.

The Minecraft adaptation has already shattered expectations, with projections indicating it will surpass initial estimates of $70 million to $80 million USD for the domestic opening weekend. This marks one of the most successful box office events since Moana 2 last November, and the Minecraft Movie is on track to surpass the Super Mario Bros. Movie’s $146 million, setting a new record for the largest three-day opening for a video game-based film.

With a hefty production budget of $150 million USD, plus marketing and distribution costs, the movie’s $58 million debut signals a promising future for the franchise. It has already received a B+ rating from CinemaScore and is expected to be the second-highest-grossing domestic release of the year, despite only having one weekend under its belt.

Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, alongside a talented cast including Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge, A Minecraft Movie is leading the box office, beating Disney’s Snow White in fourth place and Universal’s The Woman in the Yard in fifth. The film has now set its sights on international markets, and the upcoming numbers will determine just how successful this gaming world adaptation truly becomes.
